A Dartmouth man whose conduct prompted police to issue an emergency alert while they searched for him has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, followed by three years’ probation.

Woodburn told the court Campbell punched his adult nephew in the face three or four times before telling his sister he was going to retrieve a gun that was “cocked and ready to go” and use it to shoot her son. Campbell surrendered on the night of May 1, and his arrest was announced by police the next morning.

Woodburn said Campbell’s criminal record includes 16 convictions for break and enter and at least nine for theft. He also has previous convictions for assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, property mischief, and breaching release and probation orders. Woodburn said his criminal record, while extensive, “is fairly limited in terms of related offences. … It is clear from his presentence report that he has a serious drug addiction and that ultimately is the root cause of his criminal behaviours, and that there are addictions issues that he’s still dealing with.”
