Bestselling author Danielle Steel says she sometimes writes for more than 24 hours straight. “When the sun comes up, it’s like, Ah, oops, uh-oh!”
Danielle Steel likes her office to be the smallest room in the house. Her Paris office is suffused in red: a red loveseat, a red desk and a red bookcase, whereas the office in her San Francisco mansion is filled with her children’s artwork. Coziness is key, given how much time she spends burrowed in both of them. Steel typically writes for 20–22 hours a day when working on a book, she says. Sometimes, she goes past the 24-hour mark.
“When the sun comes up, it’s like, Ah, oops, uh-oh!” she says, adding that she’s disciplined about finishing her writing before she does other stuff, like sending emails. “It’s really embarrassing because people are always saying, ‘Oh, my God, I got an email from you at 4 in the morning. What was that about?’ ”
