Steven Soderbergh says there were plans for a prequel to his Daniel Craig heist film Logan Lucky, until the movie failed at the box office.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Steven Soderbergh says there were plans for a prequel to his Daniel Craig heist film Logan Lucky, until the movie flopped. Known for directing the heist movie franchise that began with Ocean’s Eleven, Soderbergh put a new spin on his favorite genre in 2017, moving the action from cool Las Vegas to down-home West Virginia.

Though Logan Lucky didn’t make out at the box office, the film was still notable for employing Craig in a comedic role, and indeed there were plans to continue exploring his off-the-rails Joe Bang character – until Logan Lucky flopped.

Logan Lucky’s Joe Bang Pointed The Way To Benoit Blanc Craig was in the middle of his renowned run as James Bond when he signed up for Logan Lucky, in a role that was a clear change-of-pace for the actor. Just how different Joe Bang was from Craig’s familiar debonair secret agent role was actually played up in Logan Lucky trailers, which added an “introducing” tag to Craig’s name, as if he were a new actor the audience had never seen before.

Joe Bang indeed gave audiences a glimpse of a different side of Craig, as he played an unhinged explosives expert who must be busted out of jail in order to join the Logan brothers’ heist. Even though Soderbergh’s plans to bring back Craig as Joe Bang ultimately fell apart, Craig continued to explore the quirkier side of things with his performance as oddball detective Benoit Blanc in Knives Out and its sequel Glass Onion.

It can in fact be said that Joe Bang pointed the way to Benoit Blanc, in showing how effective Craig could be in a strange character role at the center of an ensemble. Logan Lucky even saw Craig working with a Southern accent, pointing toward the truly distinctive and weird accent he created for his Knives Out character. It now seems highly unlikely that a Joe Bang prequel will ever happen, but more Benoit Blanc is definitely in the cards, as Rian Johnson works on Knives Out 3.
