The author, who will be appearing at Diesel, a Book Store in Brentwood with Jamie Lee Curtis on Nov. 2, is now adapting the book into a TV series.
“Signal Fires” opens with a small, familiar moment of teenage recklessness, but one that takes a girl’s life and casts a long and looming shadow.
I think “Signal Fires” is a very hopeful book. The name for it in my computer before I had a final title was “Magic Novel.” Trying hard to be present allows the past and the future to become more vivid. That’s what Waldo experiences in the book. His dad would say he’s a dreamer with his head in the clouds, but – and I haven’t thought this before – Waldo is the most present of all the characters.
Q. Throughout the novel, the parents are struggling and failing to protect their children the way they hope to and feeling guilty about that. Q. How much did your discovery about your father, your husband’s cancer and then the pandemic shape the book?
