Thousands turn out for Civic Center street fair recognizing region's Asian & Pacific Islander heritage and culture
Traditional dances once performed in ancient China and pre-colonial Hawaii came to life again Saturday at the Oceanside Civic Center Plaza during the city’s first Southern California Asian & Pacific Islander Festival.
The COVID-19 pandemic for a time stopped all mass gatherings and cultural festivals everywhere, including Oceanside. When the restrictions ended, Shin decided to try something new. Two blocks of Pier View Way were closed to make room for more than 30 vendors of food, novelties and information booths from organizations such as Cal State San Marcos, MiraCosta College and the Oceanside fire and police departments.
“Practice for this dance started in August,” said Annie Lu, whose daughter was among students of the Xianjian Dance Studio. “The girls love the colorful costumes.”
