DART wants the city to buy tickets or passes for use in the program and then distribute them to students.
Sunrise Movement Dallas hub coordinator Kidus Grima said they want to ensure the program is accessible to everyone.“Our goal is to make sure that once they start talking about pilot details, it’s as accessible as possible. We want to make sure that, like, if they already have school IDs, that that counts. Or that if there needs to be an application for really young students, the application process is really easy to access,” said Grima.
The Dallas Independent School District also has a program that provides free DART passes but it is limited to certain students and their transportation needs. For example, students deemed old enough to ride by themselves who can’t catch a school bus to their home can be eligible.“Usually, students have to go to a counselor or community liaison, sign up to get them and jump through a couple of hoops, and then are given a couple of DART passes for a week or two weeks worth.
If Dallas creates a permanent program, it will join Austin, which offers free rides permanently to all K-12 students with a valid student ID.
