James Davis, his wife and 1-year-old daughter were celebrating Christmas at her parents' home in New Jersey.

A joyous family gathering on Christmas turned tragic when a 25-year-old aspiring state trooper badly burned in a fire in his in-laws’ backyard in Atlantic County died days later.

“He was just the best guy,” Davis said by phone on Friday. “He really cared about people and was just great at everything he ever did. We’re so devastated by this.” At short time later, Davis decided he wanted to build a bonfire in the yard, something he enjoyed but didn’t get an opportunity to do in Florida. About 10 to 15 minutes later — at about 9:20 p.m. — Nicole’s father Bill Smith heard an explosion and saw that his son-in-law had caught fire. Nicole, her father, and her brother raced to his aid and used blankets to put the fire out before Davis was flown to the hospital, she explained.chief Brian Zeck said by phone Friday.
