The Arizona Diamondbacks continue a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. The 6:40 p.m. game can be seen on Bally Sports Arizona.
Josh Lowe’s two-run double in the top of the ninth capped a three-run, ninth-inning rally off Diamondbacks closer Scott McGough and lifted the Tampa Bay Rays to a come-from-behind, 3-2 win on Wednesday night at Chase Field.
It was 2-0 when McGough took over to start the ninth, an inning that began with three consecutive singles from Yandy Diaz, Wander Franco and Luke Raley. The Diamondbacks were unable to answer in the ninth against Rays closer Peter Fairbanks. Geraldo Perdomo worked a one-out walk as a pinch hitter, but Pavin Smith was rung up on strikes and Alek Thomas lined to third to end it.
Yandy Diaz doubled to lead off the game, but the Rays have not managed a hit since. They have gotten two baserunners via walk, but neither even advanced into scoring position. The Diamondbacks two runs came on a Katel Marte single in the third and a Carson Kelly single in the fourth.After a successful five-start run in Triple-A Reno, Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt is hoping this go-around in the majors is more successful than the last one.
“It just opens up other pitches like the slider,” he said. “I think guys were getting too comfortable because I wasn’t going in. Now, they’re not so comfortable and it opens up the slider and the fastball away.”
