Cyprus police search lake suitcases containing remains of women after army officer confesses to killing seven foreign women and girls

Cypriot police search near a flooded mineshaft where two female bodies were found, outside of Mitsero village, near the capital Nicosia. April 22, 2019.

The suspect, who has not officially been named, was arrested last week. However, he has been identified in local media as Nicos Metaxas, a 35-year-old Greek Cypriot. Police sources said the suspect had indicated the location of the third body, and had said the person was "either Indian or Nepali". Several hundred people attended a candlelit vigil in Nicosia on Friday evening and observed a minute's silence for the seven victims, all foreign women. The main opposition party, the left-wing AKEL, called for the resignation of the justice minister and police chief over their handling of the case.
