“It all starts with our kids, believing in what we’re preaching. …I got really good coaches that come to work every day and put our kids in great situations,” Cypress Ranch head coach Sean McAuliffe said. “They kind of drew a line in the sand saying, ‘I’m a football player and I’m going to go play my butt off for the guy next to me’ and that’s what we did tonight.”
“I think we play really complementary football,” McAuliffe said. “Our offense is young, I don’t think people realize, we got a sophomore receiver out there in Brendan Sadler. He looks like he’s 46 years old, but Kyle McCray is a 15-year-old sophomore. We got some young guys on the O-line that are all pretty much for the most part brand new.”
The Panthers’ defense quickly surrendered its first touchdown of the night. Cypress Ranch’s six-play, 43-yard opening drive was capped by Baker’s 9-yard pass to McCray early in the first quarter. The extra point was no good. Both teams turned it over on downs the next few drives, with Paetow surrendering the ball at its own 27-yard line this time.
