COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cuyahoga County elections officials have struggled to project how many people might turn out to vote for the upcoming special election on Aug. 8.
Cuyahoga County voters also have requested 51,904 absentee, or vote-by-mail ballots. Perlatti had been offering a wide range when predicting potential Cuyahoga County turnout, from 10% — a number more similar to the August 2022 election — to 50%, which is more similar to the November election. “I’m going to stop saying 10%,” Perlatti said. But the issue also has the potential to motivate voters, both for and against Issue 1, because of its ties to the abortion issue. More than 710,000 Ohioans signed a petition seeking to place the measure on the November ballot, and groups opposed to abortion have used the issue to try to mobilize hundreds of thousands of their own voters for the August election.
“Enthusiasm for Issue 1 is strong across the Buckeye State, and the Ohio Republican Party is making a targeted effort to get out the early vote ahead of August 8,” said Dan Luscheck, a spokesperson for the Ohio Republican Party, which supports Issue 1. “It is not unusual for Democrats to be ahead in liberal strongholds like Cuyahoga County, only to turn around and lose the statewide vote.”
In Lake County, 1,306 people voted early last week. That’s compared to 153 during the first four days of early voting in August 2022, 59 for the first four days of voting in May 2022 and 1,863 in the first four days of early voting in the November 2022 election.
