Australia’s oldest Test cricketer Norma Johnston has passed away, aged 95, with current men’s captain patcummins30 paying tribute to the trailblazer. 7NEWS
Johnston, a fast bowler, played seven Test matches for the Australian women’s cricket team between 1948 and 1951 and also played domestic cricket for New South Wales.Watch, Stream & Catch Up with Australia's Home of Cricket onBorn 28 December 1927, Johnston debuted for Australia against New Zealand at Wellington on March 20, 1948, and made her mark on Australian cricket until she decided to remain close to home in Bathurst three years after that.
“Her inspiration and influence extended across generations – including Ellyse Perry, who Norma fondly recalled meeting when the Australian star was just 15 years old. She remained heavily involved in the cricket tapestry of Bathurst and just last year the Bathurst Sportsground was named in her honour.Pat Cummins has paid tribute to Johnston, calling her “a pioneer of the women’s game.”
