For Global Village's Maria Manalang, working together to create interpretive dance means “truly the sharing of culture." For Sones de Mexico Folklore Academy’s Martha Reyes, choreographing the performance was a challenge to create something new. Traditionally, there isn’t a monarch butterfly dance. But every winter, millions of monarch butterflies migrate to the mountains of Mexico where many believe them to be the spirits of the dead. This was a chance for her to create something for both the adults from SAYAW and the children from Sones de Mexico Folklore Academy to perform together.
