KUALA LUMPUR: Civil society groups and some MPs have renewed their call for a total repeal of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) instead of the government's proposal to amend the Act to make it less 'draconian'.

"We feel disappointed with the Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's statement on Oct 16 that Malaysia still needs Sosma to fight terrorist activities. Activist and lawyer Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said Sosma went against the rule of law as detainees were denied due process. "All that we are asking for is a security legislation which allows the judiciary to have control over the process and where everyone has to report to the judiciary," said Ambiga.
