The announcement comes following an uptick in AAPI hate crimes in the Bay Area since the start of the pandemic.
According to a statement from Citizen Alert, there are 700,000 users of the app in the Bay Area. The Premium feature, usually $20 a month, offers users access to “live safety agents” at all times of the day or night. These agents are trained to respond to safety situations reported by the user.
The initiative is in partnership with the Chinese American Association of Commerce partners and funded by the Goldwater Collective.
