Pioneer junior defeats two-time champion Strano in finals rematch
Clearview won its fourth straight team title at the Gloucester County Girls Tennis Tournament, Sarah Crawford, third from left, claimed the individual crown as well.When Sarah Crawford first played in the Gloucester County Girls Tennis Tournament as a freshman and took third place, her then-teammate, two-time winner Carlee Cristella, declared that Crawford would one day be holding up the champion’s trophy herself.
“I’ve worked hard for a long time and did a lot in the offseason, and this showed me that I did make improvements and that the hard work is paying off,” she said. “I think mentally I was a lot stronger, strategically I was smarter, and physically I just performed better than I did last year. I worked on everything.”
The two standouts appeared destined to square off in the final yet again and did not disappoint. The top-seeded Strano outlasted Pitman sophomore Anna Fisicaro 7-5, 3-6, in one semifinal, while the second-seeded Crawford defeated her Clearview teammate Felicity Huang 6-0, 6-0. Her mentality of not looking too far ahead also played a role in her success. Crawford is now 11-0 on the season, but she gives each opponent her full attention.
