Reliever, who is the longest-tenured Padres major leaguer but is in camp on a minor-league deal, has started spring strong

The relief pitcher, who turned 39 on Thursday, walked four batters in his first two innings this spring. Since then, he has taken 15 pitches to get seven outs. Four of those outs have come after he entered a game with one away and induced an inning-ending, double-play grounder.

Most notably, though, Stammen has given himself a chance to continue a big-league career than began in 2009. He is back to being sharp. Sharpness is what he felt he lacked most while pitching through a shoulder injury last season, and sharpness is what a pitcher with a 91 mph fastball must have. Even with just 40 2/3 innings last season, Stammen has thrown more innings since 2017 than any other pitcher who made at least 95 percent of his appearance as a reliever in that stretch.
