The former assistant general manager of the Chicago Cubs is returning to the team he helped win the 2013 World Series and played for during two separate stints. Breslow is being paired up with former teammate and Red Sox manager Alex Cora.Breslow spent four seasons with the Cubs, first as director of strategic initiatives in 2019, before being promoted to director of pitching in 2020. That same year, Breslow added special assistant to Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer , respectively, to his titles.
During that time, Breslow turned the Cubs from a team that relied on free agency and trades for starting pitching into a ball club that developed its own talented bullpen. And Breslow did most of this while working remotely from Newton, Mass. Therefore, he won't have to go very far for his new job, and even better than that, Breslow is stepping into a Boston operation that he should be fairly familiar with. Thanks to the Red Sox's continuity, Breslow will be in a room full of familiar faces, and many of who fondly remember his second stint with the team from 2012 to 2015.
During that 2013 title season, the New Haven, Conn. native made 10 relief appearances and enjoyed nine scoreless innings — including eight in a row during the playoffs. It came as no surprise after finishing the regular season with a 1.18 ERA in 61 appearances.
