CP to restart operations after railway and union agree to binding arbitration — via financialpost
CP and Teamsters Canada said they will resolve the labour dispute through binding arbitration, which means an arbitrator will produce a final decision on the collective agreement that both sides will be forced to accept.
Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, which represents the 3,000 CP workers, said it did not make the decision “lightly.” The end of the shutdown will calm nerves across the North American supply chain, after weeks of consternation over the impacts of a protracted standoff at CP. Farmers warned that the dispute was happening at the worst time of year, threatening to stem the flow of fertilizer across the country weeks before it was needed for spring planting.
The federal government was facing mounting pressure from industry, as well as Canadian and U.S. politicians, to force an end to the dispute. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe urged Ottawa to use back-to-work legislation and deem rail as an essential service.Article content
