Throughout the team’s prospect development camp, Koelzer and Cheverie learned from the team's coaching staff and serve as assistant coaches during the team’s intrasquad scrimmage concluding the camp.
With each name called in the NHL Draft, Kelsey Koelzer and Kori Cheverie would get butterflies.
Koelzer, the head coach of Arcadia University's women's ice hockey team since 2019, joins Cheverie, an assistant coach with Hockey Canada, in the second year of the Arizona Coyotes diverse coaching internship program. The team launched the program last year with Daunte' Abercrombie and Nathaniel Brooks. Brooks is now working as the skill development coach for the Coyotes.
A former Ivy League Player of the Year at Princeton, Koelzer made her way into the professional ranks when she was selected first overall by the Metropolitan Riveters in the National Women's Hockey League in 2016. “She obviously has more experience than I do, that is something that is eye-opening and is a huge opportunity for me to learn not only from the amazing NHL staff, but also from someone who has taken as many lumps as I have, especially on the men’s side,” Koelzer said.
Cheverie longs for the day when women earning high-level coaching opportunities becomes commonplace and not a groundbreaking achievement.
