PETALING JAYA: Mohd Haikal Nazri-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi were all fired up to face their opponents in the Orleans Masters final but Covid-19 spoiled their party.
Haikal was tested Covid-19 positive just hours before the final in France, and the Malaysian pair had to concede a walkover to Holland’s Ruben Jille-Ties van Der Lecqin in a tournament that they had a good chance of winning their first title this year.
They had blown away higher ranked pairs, including second seeds Toma Junior Popov-Christ Popov of France en route to the final.Haikal had to stay back to undergo quarantine in Orleans while Arif and their coach Tan Bin Shen have returned home yesterday. “Arif and I were not expected to go beyond the first round. Beating the Popov brothers was the key, as this French pair had given other top pairs a huge challenge, including Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi. So overall, it has been a good tournament for us.’’“Haikal and Arif are playing in higher ranked tournaments this year and they did well to beat the more experienced players in France.
