The complainant, Junaidi Louis Jimir, said his 73-year-old father contracted the virus recently and was sent to the Dewan Arena Belia quarantine centre in Kunak for treatment. He claimed that his father was left on his own without any medication given for 10 days and when asked, he said that officers on duty explained that this was because there is no medicine for Covid-19 as yet.

Junaidi also expressed concern over the seemingly lax standard operating procedures in the quarantine centre, claiming that beds were placed too close to one another while pillows and beds were provided without any sheets covering them. He added that while he is grateful for the unwavering commitment and contributions of frontliners from the start of the pandemic, he hoped that those tasked to man quarantine and treatment centres would try to do better in terms of providing and maintaining the facilities. Junaidi said that these are just his views and concerns, and that they do not represent the opinions of others. In response, state National Security Council director Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said district quarantine and treatment centres were under the district disaster management committee. It is coordinated by the local authorities including district offices, district health officials and civil defence officials in the areas concerned. “This issue has been raised and we have been told that the district officials and health authorities are working on addressing the matter,” she said. Sabah Health Department director Dr Rose Nani Mudin said they are aware of this and actions will be taken to rectify the situation.
