“Looking at the prediction by JP Morgan, World Health Organisation and the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research, we are expecting a surge in a week’s time,” he said.
Noor Hisham said he and his team would be meeting later today to determine the kind of modeling that can be applied to make a projection for the coming one or two weeks, based on the available data.Noor Hisham said what is urgently needed to be done was strengthening the public health services at hospitals, including wards for Covid-19 patients and the Intensive Care Unit.
He said plans were also underway to enhance the facilities at 71 screening hospitals, 40 hospitals with the capacity to attend to symptomatic patients and seven hospitals equipped to treat Covid-19 patients. Noor Hisham said despite the challenges, the ministry had already taken pro-active measures before Covid-19 was declared a pandemic.
“Our hospitals are congested, but with good planning we have managed to vacate hospitals , equip seven other hospitals and construct a temporary makeshift hospital in three days at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park with 600 beds. That is a success,” he said.
