PETALING JAYA: Nine more cases of Covid-19 were detected linked to the recent special Parliament sitting, bringing the total to 97 cases as of Tuesday (Aug 10), says Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The Health director-general said analysis by the Institute for Medical Research revealed that five of eight samples linked to the special sitting were of the Delta variant.Of the nine new cases, he said that four were close contacts of a positive case detected during pre-screening before the start of the special sitting and health district authorities were notified of the cases on July 23.

He added the four cases displayed light symptoms and were placed under home quarantine before being allowed to return to work. On the case involving Datuk Jaimin Samitah, Dr Noor Hisham said the case represented the first death of a high-ranking official linked to the Parliament special sitting. He said that Jaimin had initially tested negative after undergoing a RTK-Ag self-test kit on July 29 but developed symptoms on July 31, where a PRC test confirmed that he was infected with the Covid-19."However, his condition became very critical and he passed away on Aug 9," he said.

Jaimin was a special officer to Datuk Guandee Kohoi and accompanied the Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister during the special Parliament sitting between July 26 and 29.
