KEPALA BATAS: The Covid-19 pandemic has already begin to affect the preparations of the country's athletes for the upcoming Olympic Games scheduled to be held this July in Tokyo.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican said the training of national athletes has been disrupted, with many events and competitions that were supposedly participated by athletes are affected due to the outbreak.
"Looking at the current situation with the global concern of the virus outbreak, our athletes cannot participate in the tournament overseas and even in our country, as many of it has been postponed or cancelled due to the outbreak," he told reporters during a session with members of the press at his constituency.
The Kepala Batas MP, however, said the national athletes' readiness to compete in any tournament is always on the top mark. He said he is scheduled to visit National Sport Council next week for a briefing and to get further details on the athletes' latest preparation for the Olympic Games. "I was told that 12 athletes have qualified for the Games and another 23 are in the final stage to qualify for the final stage of the Games," he said.
