Most football clubs would be mortified at one of their players being in court for an aggravated burglary hearing. In Josh Ward’s case, Hawthorn have nothing to worry about. The silky left-footer is on the right side of the dock.

It’s actually helping his game.

“I just enjoy the way it sort of gets you thinking, structures your thinking in a very logical way,” Ward said. “I think it’s sort of helped me organise my thoughts when things get pretty crazy, and maybe I’m not going so well or injured or out of form.”. After a debut in round one, his form tapered, and he was dropped to the VFL.

“I think they’re always a bit worried about everyone really when they play footy because it’s a contact sport. I think it did concern them a little bit, but they backed in and completely trusted the Hawks people and doctors and I think they’re fine with me playing now.” Listed at 183cm and 77kg last season, Ward did not have the size and build for the more robust side of the game. Eager to improve, he focused on his weaknesses but became overly preoccupied by them. It had come at the cost of the strengths that had earned him a spot on an AFL list: his laser-like kicking and aerobic capacity.

Ward is a player who has learned from his initiation, as a career-best 34 disposals in his second game back after concussion, two hauls of 26 – including last week – and a 24 demonstrate.
