Losing their son while awaiting the fate of their incarcerated daughter has taken a physical and emotional toll on the couple, both in their late 60s.
While awaiting the possible release from prison of their daughter Paula, whose clemency petition has been sitting on Gov. Pritzker's desk awaiting his signature, Larry and Mary Aiardo lost their only son to a fatal overdose of kratom, an over-the-counter herb that is derived from an evergreen tree in Southeast Asia.
A photo of Paula Aiardo, while taking part in Logan Correctional Center's dog-training program, is attached to her 50-page petition for executive clemency that she and her supporters hope the governor will sign But the only drug she found in Michael Aiardo’s system was the derivative of a popular Southeast Asian evergreen tree called kratom that is sold over-the-counter in gas stations and smoke shops.
Kratom, which the Centers for Disease Control links to nearly 100 deaths in 2019, does not have FDA approval. In that year, it was the only substance detected in seven fatalities, like Michael’s case. The Drug Enforcement Administration lists it as a drug of concern. Michael began using kratom a year ago for depression and anxiety after giving up cigarettes and alcohol because “he thought this would help,” his dad said, adding that Michael experienced a seizure two months before this fatal one.Side effects, according to Mayo Clinic, include liver damage, hallucinations, depression, breathing suppression, seizure, coma and death.
