On Friday, law enforcement officers successfully intercepted several truckloads of counterfeit goods worth more than R100 million at a shopping complex in Bellville, Cape Town. Four individuals were apprehended and arrested by the authorities.
The joint operation, led by the police, customs and excise and brand protectors, commenced at approximately 10am following an extensive investigation.
The collaborative efforts of the multidisciplinary team culminated in the execution of a search warrant, resulting in the discovery of a vast cache of counterfeit products representing a variety of renowned brands as well as illicit tobacco products. These items were subsequently confiscated and taken to a secure depot to be used as exhibits in violation of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
“The value of the seizure is hard to determine at this premature stage. A fair estimate will go beyond R100 million. As our investigation unfolds, more arrests could be effected,” he said. The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape Police, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, expressed his gratitude to the team members whose efforts resulted in the successful eradication of fake products from the streets of the Province.
He issued a stern warning to individuals who profit from selling substandard goods, negatively impacting the economy, and urged them to reconsider their actions as the police have plans for similar operations in the future.
