Businesses in Newry are still trying to recover after serious flooding hit the Co Down city last week, according to the President of the Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Julie Gibbons said the senior civil servant in Northern Ireland has not visited the flooded area to see the damage, nor has Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris.
In relation to any financial support, she said there are"lots of rumours that there is an imminent announcement to be made, but nobody knows the scale of that and whether it's going to be substantial enough really to put businesses back to where they would like to be." She said information about the situation has been fed up to the head of the civil service Jane Brady,"who has been really engaging as well and working very hard to try to put a case to the Secretary of State for a financial hardship fund."
She added that Mr Heaton-Harris is due to visit Northern Ireland today and they"are hopeful that there may be an announcement and the Shadow Secretary of State has actually been very engaging as well and has been lobbying on our behalf too."
