PETALING JAYA: News being spread that the Thaipusam celebrations will be cancelled because of the coronavirus outbreak is false, says the Batu Caves temple chairman.
“We expect over 100,000 devotees," said Nadarajah at a press conference on Friday , adding that despite the fear of the virus, people will still come as it is a religious event.Those attending are also encouraged to wear masks, he said, adding that ambulances and trained medical personnel will be on standby.
“Batu Caves is a popular tourist attraction, and we can't prevent individuals from visiting” said Nadarajah. On Thursday , the World Health Organisation declared the coronavirus outbreak that has killed 170 people in China a global emergency, as cases spread to at least 18 countries.
