Corbin Burnes has made all kinds of history this season but will it be enough to impress Cy Young Award voters?
Saturday marked Burnes’ 28th start of the season while his top competition for the honor — Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler and Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler have made 32 starts each with the Dodgers’ Max Scherzer making 30.
Counsell doesn’t think Burnes’ innings-count should even factor into the conversation because he believes the process is a big reason for Burnes’ success. One month later, Burnes solidified his status as a front-runner for the award when he combined with Josh Hader on just the second no-hitter in Brewers history.
“Every now and then, you take a peek at it but that’s all out of your control,” Burnes said. “The only thing I can do is go out and do my best to throw the baseball the way I can and the way I want, and give my team the best opportunity to win.
