JOHOR BARU: Over 12,000 cartons of illicit cigarettes have been seized by the cops at the Kota Tinggi-Sungai Rengit road near here.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said that the police had stopped a lorry that was moving in a suspicious manner at about 3.20am on Saturday at Taman Fasa Indah, Jalan Kota Tinggi-Sungai Renggit.
"Following checks on the lorry, we found 244 boxes of illegal cigarettes. There were two men on the lorry, including one who was arrested for trying to stop civil servants from performing their duties," he said in a statement here on Saturday. He noted that the police seized a total of 12,200 cartons of illegal cigarettes and a lorry, amounting to RM1.83mil.
Comm Kamarul said that the case is being investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 186 of the Penal Code.
