A police corporal was remanded for five days to assist in the investigation of soliciting a bribe of RM80,000 from a woman to help her release her husband who was detained under SOSMA.

GEORGE TOWN: A corporal police officer was remanded for five days starting today to assist in the investigation of soliciting a bribe of RM80,000 from a woman. The remand application against the suspect was made by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) before Magistrate Azlan Basri at the George Town Magistrate's Court today.

It is understood that the suspect demanded the 'suapan' money to help the woman release her husband who was detained under the Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act (SOSMA 2012). According to sources, the suspect, also a man in his 40s, is suspected to have contacted the woman on November 30 following the arrest of the woman's husband. “Through the phone conversation, the suspect demanded about RM80,000 from the woman in exchange for changing the statement to help her husband be released from SOSMA custody. “The suspect also asked for an advance of about RM25,000 from the woman who then made several money transfers through the e-wallet payment system involving a value of about RM3,000,” he said here today. According to the source, last Monday, the suspect once again contacted the woman and asked for about RM2,000 in cash. “Following that, the woman then handed over another RM1,000 to the suspect in a meeting at a petrol station in Sungai Dua at around 2 pm yesterday, before being arrested,” he said. He added that the case is now being investigated under Section 17(a) of the SPRM Act 2009. – UTUSA
