USM’s Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid says the top two party posts must be contested if a new round of party elections takes place.
Allowing aspirants to compete against party warlords for the post of president and deputy president will ‘herald a new democratic era’ for Umno, said Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid.
“If it can be ascertained that the elections have the support of both the party leadership and rank and file, then fair elections should be conducted, allowing opponents of the present leadership to contest.Fauzi said if Umno decides to hold fresh elections, the top two posts must be contested. Tengku Razaleigh had said earlier this week the elections were necessary to rejuvenate Umno following its poor performance in the Aug 12 state elections.
