The cloud hanging over the future of Bonza makes it clear more must be done to encourage new players in Australian aviation – and to support them.
Bonza boss Tim Jordan had to go overseas to find a backer for his plan to crack Australia’s domestic aviation market. He envisioned an airline carrier that would fly largely untapped routes, linking regional centres with each other or with more far-flung capital cities.
Those failures include Compass, which fell over in 1991, and Tiger Airlines, which was swallowed by competitor Virgin in 2013 and eventually pulled from the air in 2020.even though he could see a market for travel on routes like Cairns to Rockhampton and Melbourne to Port Macquarie.
At Sydney airport, Qantas and Virgin have also been accused of “slot-squatting” – holding landing times they don’t intend to use just to stop competitors from gaining access. Such initiatives are welcome, but the possible loss of yet another airline in Australia shows the government can’t delay initiating and encouraging such reform.
