On Monday, Aug. 14, the 'GARS' intersection will reopen with the new left turn system.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On Monday, Aug. 14, the Fairbanks area will have to adjust to the new left turn system utilized in the renovated “GARS” intersection.

With the new system, driving straight across the intersection will remain the same and the right hand turns will be very similar, with a couple having a pull off prior to the intersection. The biggest changes will come from the new left turn system. “From two directions, you’ll turn before the core intersection so that when thru traffic is occurring, the left turns can occur simultaneously,” said Perreault. If you want to turn onto Airport Way coming from the south, leaving the Richardson Highway, your left turn lane will come up before the intersection. There will be two left lanes with their own stop lights that will cross the highway, joining up at the left turn perpendicular to Airport Way.

“In the other directions you’ll turn left after the core intersections and then do a U-turn and rejoin the direction you were hoping to join and in those, the left turn lanes can still happen simultaneously with the thru traffic,” Perreault said. Coming from Airport Way, the left turn north will take you towards Fort Wainwright, then you’ll conduct a left turn before reaching the gates. This will let you turn around and merge onto the Steese Expressway, going north.
