Original budgeted cost was $2.2 million; now it's $7.6 million
Construction costs have risen to $7.6 million, more than triple the original estimate, for the 50-bed Oceanside homeless shelter expected to open in July on the former Ocean Shores alternative high school campus.
The original landscape plan proved incompatible with the site, and landscaping revisions cost $400,000. The asphalt parking lot had to be replaced for an additional $400,000, and unexpected upgrades required for the electrical system were about $390,000. New gas and water service lines, insulation and more were needed. The Oceanside City Council voted unanimously in 2020 to buy the 3.5-acre campus for $1.88 million, with plans for a homeless shelter and other uses there.
