Transport Minister Anthony Loke states that congestion charges in Kuala Lumpur are not currently feasible due to the need for improved public transportation infrastructure and services. He emphasizes the importance of a sustainable public transport system with comprehensive networks, accessible services, and integration with land-use development.

The implementation of congestion charges in Kuala Lumpur is not feasible at this time, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke . He stated that improving public transportation is a prerequisite for the successful introduction of such charges. Loke emphasized that imposing congestion charges without a reliable public transportation alternative would only exacerbate the burden on the public and negatively impact their socio-economic well-being.

He highlighted that developed countries that have implemented congestion charges did so only after establishing a sustainable public transport system with comprehensive networks and accessible services for their citizens. Loke further outlined the necessary conditions for congestion charges to be effective in Malaysia. These include safe and accessible infrastructure for first- and last-mile connectivity, active transportation modes linking public transport stations to key activity centers, and the implementation of sustainable land-use development integrated with a transit-oriented development concept. Currently, the Transport Ministry is prioritizing the enhancement of public transportation as an essential service for both urban and rural areas. They are collaborating with various agencies and ministries to advance public transport development. Loke revealed that congestion charges were discussed at the Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion meeting, which aimed to formulate strategies for short-, medium-, and long-term solutions to address the escalating traffic congestion, particularly in the Klang Valley
