SEATTLE — Leaders in King County and Seattle made a unified call on Wednesday to end a months-long concrete workers’ strike.
They say layoffs are mounting and important infrastructure projects are stalled, including work to reopen the West Seattle Bridge. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and King County Executive Dow Constantine held a news conference in White Center at the King County Metro Transit RapidRide H Line site where construction is halted.
The mayor said that for each day the strike continues, it pushes back final repairs on the West Seattle Bridge even further. “For us of course the most critical project is the West Seattle Bridge. That all things considered, we certainly would have had that completed by mid-year 2022. Based on our subject matter experts at , we anticipate that if current labor dispute is not settled in a few weeks, right around Feb. 20, this will have a significant delay of the project,” said Harrell.The strike involves six Seattle-area companies and about 300 of their unionized concrete mixer drivers.
