Con Edison says that it may have to limit new natural gas service in New York City if a controversial pipeline is not built, potentially expanding a moratorium in Westchester that is drawing harsh criticism
The utility also serves 868,000 gas customers in the Bronx, northern Queens and Manhattan. The letter states the utility has no role in the Williams pipeline but shares transmission infrastructure to bring natural gas into New York City.for natural gas in the city in the coming years and, absent new supplies, moratoriums are possible. The letter makes an explicit connection between the proposed pipeline, which environmentalists are pressuring Gov.
There’s no forecasted date for any moratorium, said Con Edison spokesperson Michael Clendenin. But if the Williams pipeline is not built, it will happen sooner than if the pipeline is constructed. The two companies will be competing for a limited supply of natural gas as demand grows, he said, presenting significant challenges.
The letter is circulating to elected officials ahead of a Monday hearing held by the City Council’s Committee of Environmental Protection on the environmental impacts of the proposed pipeline, which will include a vote on a resolution calling on state officials to reject its Water Quality Certification permit to begin construction.
