COMMUNITY leaders in Penang have urged the government not to postpone again the enforcement of new rules on the sales of cheap liquor, reported Makkal Osai.

Bagan Dalam assemblyman Satees Muniandy and Seberang Prai Municipal Council member David Marshal said the rules were announced in 2016 after a long six years’ effort by Indian NGOs.

Then Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam had announced that the sales of liquor in bottles below 700ml would no longer be allowed, to curb the sales of cheap liquor and also prohibit the sales of alcohol for those under the age of 21.However, the manufacturers appealed for an extension and it was granted.Satees and Marshal said the Indian community, especially the young and students, were facing many social issues and the availability of cheap liquor made matters worse.

The cooperative’s chairman S. Kesavan said their incomes were from the Sabha’s canteen, travel agency, festivals and concerts, and investment in banks. The above articles are compiled from the vernacular newspapers .
