Jacinta Allan will not appear before a state parliamentary probe into the cancelled event, as even more costs are revealed.
Victoria’s bill for the 2026 Commonwealth Games has topped $500 million, documents show, as key public servants prepare to face a state parliamentary inquiry into the cancelled event.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan cannot be compelled to face the upper house inquiry, which begins on Monday, and says she will not attend. The upper house inquiry on Monday will hear from the chairwoman of the now-defunct 2026 Games organising committee, Peggy O’Neal, and its chief executive, Jeroen Weimar, as well as Department of Premier and Cabinet secretary Jeremi Moule and Allen Garner, former chief executive of the government’s dedicated Games office.Opposition spokesman for sport and events Sam Groth said the cancelled Games had “humiliated” Victoria.
The committee subsequently asked the state government for a $722 million boost to its original $1 billion budget on February 22.
