The Commanders released quarterback Carson Wentz on Monday, freeing up $26.176 million on their salary cap this offseason.

John McDonnell / The Washington PostThe Carson Wentz Era with the Washington Commanders was far from a fruitful one. The Commanders released the quarterback on Monday, freeing up $26.176 million on their salary cap this offseason.

The Eagles selected Wentz, now 30, with the second overall pick in the 2016 draft, but he forced a trade after the 2020 season, when Jalen Hurts replaced him as the starter. After one lackluster season with the Indianapolis Colts, Wentz was dealt to Washington last March. Wentz threw seven touchdown passes in his first two games with the Commanders, then struggled. He suffered a broken finger in Week 6, then missed the next eight games. He eventually lost the starting job to Taylor Heinicke.
