New home build near the Guadalupe River was designed to look 'like it just popped up out of the ground,' as well as help preserve the Texas Hill Country's natural resources.
A collection of soda and other glass bottles that Michelle Whitwell Pokorny found along the nearby Guadalupe River banks is displayed on a shelf in the house.Raised in Cotulla where, she said, “everything there pokes you or bites you,” Pokorny realized early that living off the land can be a precarious endeavor, especially in the Hill Country. Her father was a rancher whose first order of business was getting enough grass to grow so he could feed his cattle.
The centerpiece of the house is the great room that encompasses a dining area, sitting area with a TV and fireplace and an adjacent kitchen. The large windows and sliding glass doors along the back wall overlook a wide expanse of Hill Country meadow. “We had to go through quite a few bricks to get enough that weren’t broken or too chipped,” said Sid Woodruff, a project manager with Brad Moore Builders. “They did a really good job of mixing in the colors, including throwing in a few black ones for contrast. It wasn’t your typical brick-laying scenario.”
Hand-hewn, the beams are not square, so butting them up against new construction can also difficult. Instead of adding wood trim to cover the imperfections, they took inspiration from the industrial look of Hotel Emma at Pearl and ran an old plumbing pipe along the seam, which keeps with the home’s aesthetic."It's got character and there's history to these pieces and materials," she said."I've always been drawn to old wood and rusted iron and metal.
