The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will be releasing a resolution to suspend the proclamation of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) candidates who have pending disqualification cases.
Even if the candidates may win the election, Comelec has the jurisdiction to suspend their proclamation should their case remain unresolved, said Chairman George Garcia on Monday in a radio interview. More than 7,000 candidates were given “show-cause” orders due to alleged election violations, such as premature campaigning, and others.
There are more than 160 petitions for disqualification as of writing, and since the beginning of the campaign period, 341 candidates received show-cause orders for illegal campaigning. However, Garcia assured that the poll body would still prioritize the “due process,” and will not hastily disqualify or suspend candidates.
