Thirty-two people, age 17 to 71, trekked 71 miles on a pilgrimage to St. James' reputed burial place
The president of the University of San Diego often walks the trails in Tecolote Canyon in the early morning with students, faculty and others who want to join him.
USD sophomore Fatima Licona Balderrama traveled with her younger sister, Lourdes, who turned 18 on the day they celebrated their arrival at the cathedral. That was, indeed, a memorable birthday. “You don’t even have to say anything. There always is somebody there supporting you,” says the Poway resident, whose wife, Teresa, joined him on the trek.
There were side trips to stores and pharmacies to buy walking sticks, Epsom salts, electrolytes, ice, aspirin and other medical supplies, Gonzales said. Instead of the usual chit-chat with strangers about weather or where they came from, the overriding question was: “Why are you here?” and that opened immediate meaningful conversations.
