Retired S.D. Community College District head Constance Carroll to advise Biden on arts and humanities, joining George Clooney, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Garner, Kerry Washington, and others
After stepping down in 2021 with 17 years’ service as chancellor of the San Diego Community College District, she continued to serve academia on state and national boards and associations.
“I am really, really looking forward to this,” says Carroll, who lives in San Marcos. “I was very surprised to receive an email six or seven months ago indicating I was scheduled for nomination. I knew nothing about it.” “The arts and humanities are central to our understanding of history, cultures, expression and the myriad issues associated with the quality of life, both in America and around the world,” Carroll noted in a S.D. Community College District statement.
Nine years ago, the then-SDCCD chancellor worked with former state Sen. Marty Block on a bill to establish a pilot program allowing 15 community colleges to create 15 four-year baccalaureate degree programs in workforce fields. They were not allowed to duplicate four-year degrees being offered by state colleges and universities.
The pilot program succeeded, became permanent and expanded to all California community colleges. For instance, S.D. City College just was approved to add a degree in cybersecurity and defense.
