After Confidence Game won the recent Rebel Stakes, part owners say they are enjoying the 'storybook' ride with the speedy horse.
From left, part owners Gary Ahasic, John Cibulskis and Brad Westrom hold the trophy from the recent Rebel Stakes race in Hot Springs, Arkansas, after their horse Confidence Game's surprise win in the contest.
Making this ride that much more exciting – and local – is that the Westroms are sharing it with two other Aurora-area couples who, likewise, invested in Confidence Game. So how did a group from the area – none wealthy or with track records in thoroughbred racing – find themselves with Kentucky Derby dreams?
In 2020 the Batavia couple asked about joining a group of thoroughbred owners that Godby captained through his Louisiana-based Don’t Tell My Wife Stables. Racing partnerships, it turns out, are making it possible for many middle class folks to experience this historic blue-blood sport from such an insider vantage.
According to Brad Westrom, Confidence Game comes from excellent breeding but some buyers were wary of his x-rays, which trainer J. Keith Desormeaux disregarded because he recognized the pure athletic ability of this horse.
