The U.S. Navy League magazine, Seapower, heralds San Diego Harbor Police chief in its annual profiles in service issue

Magda Fernandez is only the second woman, and the first Latina, to be sworn in as chief of the San Diego Harbor Police. She also is recognized as the first Latina police chief in the county.

This February-March edition of the U.S. Navy League magazine, Seapower, features a profile on Magda Fernandez. When Southwest Airlines was immobilized by a weather crisis and canceled most of its flights, her staff bought about 60 pizzas, Gatorade and bottled water. The officers handed them out free to stranded passengers at S.D. International Airport after concessions had closed and no food was available.

Harbor police officers need to be multi-faceted because their job runs the gamut of airport security , deploying canine teams, extinguishing boat fires and working with the Coast Guard on underwater rescues, along with responding to daily crime calls.
