Columbus State's on-campus child care center will have room for nearly 100 children, from infants to preschoolers.
Columbus State Community College educates thousands of Greater Columbus area high schoolers, college students and adult learners each year. This fall, the community college will add another generation of students to its Downtown campus: preschoolers.
“This is an important step within Columbus State’s commitment to support increased equitable prosperity within our region,” said Columbus State Community College President David Harrison. “The on-campus presence of a child care center, informed by our faculty’s expertise as a leader in early childhood education, will make a big difference in the lives of our student-parents, future child care professionals, and working families.
Columbus State will pay for construction using funds from a $300 million bond issue approved by Franklin County voters in April 2020 intended to modernize classrooms, labs and campus infrastructure. Child care was one of the many weaknesses made clear by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the spring of 2020, when schools and employers sent everyone to work and learn from home, many parents were forced to juggle jobs, day care and teaching. When jobs and schools began to reopen, child care options lagged. Enrollment changed, but so did the number of child care workers returning to their jobs.
"For us, it really is about ensuring that we are a part of the solution to the child care crisis in our community," Butler said."We know firsthand from students and community members living in this neighborhood that when individuals do not have access to high quality childcare, it is limiting."Recovery and Resiliency Advisory Committee recommendations
